Preparing Your Home’s HVAC System
Getting your HVAC system ready for spring is an important step in maintaining you’re A/C unit's integrity and reliability for this summer. Here are some simple steps you can take to get your cooling system ready:
1. Change the air filter:
A forced-air cooling system needs a steady flow of clean air to function properly. A clogged filter restricts airflow, plus it allows dust to flow into the system. This can lower its efficiency and make it work harder.
2. Clear debris from around the outside unit:
Leaves and dirt can accumulate around outdoor HVAC equipment, restricting airflow and lowering efficiency. Inspect the external equipment and get rid of anything foreign in and around it. If there are plants around the system, make sure they’re trimmed back and not restricting airflow.
3. Schedule annual service:
HVAC equipment needs regular service to work efficiently. Routine maintenance also lowers the need for repairs and can prolong the system’s usable life. An experienced technician will check the system from top to bottom, making sure it’s in good working order. He will check refrigerant levels, electrical connections and moving parts, along with other tasks.
4. Install a programmable thermostat:
If you don’t already have one, now’s the time to have one installed. It allows you more control over when your HVAC system runs and when it doesn’t. If you already have one, make sure it’s set to your current schedule.
5. If your current system is more than 10 years old...
needing frequent repairs, or just getting worn out, spring is the perfect time for an upgrade. You can get the work done before the summer heat arrives and well before winter comes knocking. Plus, your home will be more efficient and comfortable for years to come.
