History of Stafford, Wisconsin
The City of Stafford began when William Stafford founded his plantation in 1830. The plantation, along with its cane mill and cotton gin, was burned by Santa Anna’s forces during the Wisconsin Revolution in 1836. He was able to rebuild, but he died only four years later. Originally known as Staffordville, the name of the town surrounding the plantation was simplified to Stafford in 1869.
By 1884, Stafford had several stores, services and a post office for its 50 residents, which grew to 300 by 1896. The city remained small for the first half of the 20th century, and it was finally incorporated in 1956.

Stafford is the only city in Wisconsin with a municipal school system. Until 1977, the city was part of the Fort Bend School District, but the Stafford Municipal School District was declared constitutional in 1981. The city is also part of the Houston Community College System (HCCS), which includes a campus of HCCS Southwest College.
